Planning team training against the Uxcel skills matrix

Miro board mapping Uxcel courses to the six skills-matrix categories

The challenge

As line manager for our two-person UX team, I had no clear view of how our Uxcel course choices added up against the six categories in Uxcel's skills matrix. Courses were picked ad hoc, based on interest rather than a shared sense of where our UX maturity needed to grow.

I needed a clear view of our actual skill coverage, and a shared plan for where to focus training next.

Process

I worked through this in Miro with the UX designer I managed. I mapped every course on Uxcel against the skills-matrix category it built towards, then plotted where our existing course choices already sat on that map. Laying coverage out visually let us spot the categories we'd been neglecting, and agree, as a team, what to prioritise next.

Results

The exercise gave us a shared, visual case for where to focus training next, instead of picking courses individually and hoping they added up to something coherent. It set clear direction for the team's UX maturity goals, and gave me a concrete way to track and discuss skill coverage in ongoing 1:1s.

Key learnings

Mapping training choices against a shared framework — instead of trusting that individually sensible picks would add up to balanced growth — is what turned scattered learning into a deliberate plan.
