Cutting Policy Wording Comparison back to something usable

Matrix 360 Policy Wording Comparison prototype in Storybook. A table compares breakdown assistance wording across products, with long wordings capped in each cell and an "Updated on" link. The Storybook story list is visible on the left. Product names and ticket numbers are blurred.

The challenge

Matrix 360 users wanted to compare insurers' policy wordings. The wordings ranged from a few lines to a full page. Our wording data also had gaps and was slow to retrieve. I needed to design a comparison that stayed usable for short and long wordings, and still gave the business something it could release.

Process

I prototyped the full experience in Storybook first. It had a comparator picker, keyword highlighting with a "matches only" view, a features filter with presets, and a version diff. The diff shows added and removed wording between policy versions.

Long wordings broke the table. So I proposed capping the text in each cell. The full wording opens in a side sheet. There, users can compare side by side or inline, depending on how long the wording is.

The business then had to trim the scope. Some wording links were missing, and retrieving every comparison was slow. So the first release shows current wording only. I kept the table and side sheet, because they still worked with incomplete data.

Results

The feature is live in production behind a LaunchDarkly feature flag. It shows current wording only. The full prototype stays in Storybook for later releases, as the data improves.

Key learnings

A usable first release beats a merely viable one. Protecting the table and side sheet kept it useful while the data caught up.
